Messi magic ensures dream debut for Luis Enrique as a new star is born in Munir

The Argentine struck twice and the youngster added another as Barca beat Elche 3-0 in a fine first Liga outing for the Asturian's new-look Blaugrana at Camp Nou
Messi magic ensures dream debut for Luis Enrique as a new star is born in Munir
It was a satisfying start. There was an air of expectation around Camp Nou as Barcelona began a new era on Sunday night, but Luis Enrique's team took time to settle before, suddenly, everything clicked into gear.

The Asturian coach picked a side featuring four footballers making their Barca debuts: goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, defender Jeremy Mathieu, midfielder Ivan Rakitic and striker Munir El Haddadi. On the right side of the team's three-man forward line, meanwhile, Rafinha was making only his fourth appearance for the Catalan club. New era, new players, new Barca,

The opening exchanges were interrupted by the appearance of a black cat on the pitch. Was it an omen? Not at all. But the jokes quickly rained in on social media nonetheless. "The cat covers the wing better than Alves," wrote one Tweeter, while another added mischievously: "The cat has run more than Messi so far tonight."

The cat in question is looked after and fed by club employees at Camp Nou and previously made a brief cameo in a game against Real Sociedad in February, 2012. Presumably, after leaving the pitch, the cat got his milk. But Messi got the cream.

Who's Haddadi? | Munir made it 2-0 on his debut with a fine finish
Leo's double came later, but twice Barca rattled the woodwork as Luis Enrique's men stepped up the pace later in the opening half. First, the 18-year-old Munir, in the side for the injured Neymar, crashed an angled drive into the top of the left-hand post. Then, Andres Iniesta sent a thunderous effort against the bar.

Top scorer for Barca in pre-season, Munir was then put through by Messi, but inexplicably squared for Rafinha when it looked easier to score. Moments later, however, the Argentine showed him how it's done as he took up a pass from Sergio Busquets, sidestepped Sergio Pelegrin and slotted into the corner with a fine finish.

Javer Mascherano was sent off for a professional foul shortly afterwards, but Barca barely noticed and the excellent Munir made it 2-0 straight after the break with a delightfully deft finish after Rakitic's lovely lofted pass. A new star was born.

"Munir is tearing through the levels at a terrifying rate," Luis Enrique enthused later. "He gives us options, he scores goals and he's competitive."

So too is Messi. The Argentine struck again for 3-0 after 63 minutes with a stunning solo strike which made even his coach smile, beating three defenders one after the other before placing a precise shot just inside the post.

"Messi is the best in the world, even when he is defending," the 44-year-old said afterwards. "We see him day in, day out doing unbelievable things. He'll be the best in the world as long as he wants to give assists, score goals, press ... He has been touched by the magic wand for many years now."

It was a glorious goal and all-round performance from the 27-year-old, who was clearly in the mood after some trying times for Barca in 2013-14 and the agony of losing the World Cup final with Argentina earlier this summer.

Luis Enrique will be content as well following an accomplished team display in his first match. Barca were expected to win this one, but the Blaugrana still had to produce the goods and they came through with positive sensations. The new project is well and truly underway.

Ebola:Nigerian Customs Destroys Trailer Load Of Smuggled Monkey Meat

#Ebola:Nigerian Customs Destroys Trailer Load Of Smuggled Monkey Meat

In the fight against Ebola, the Nigerian customs intercepted a trailer load of smoked monkey meat being smuggled into the country through the Jibia border in Katsina state.
Monkey is suspected to be one of the major sources of Ebola.
According to The Nation, the trailer loaded with the meat was seized by the Federal Operation Unit “zone B” led by OC of the team, Assistant Comptroller, Gambo Azare. The meat was destroyed under the supervision of the Comptroller, Federal Operation, Zone B of the service, ATS Maina and the deputy governor of Katsina State represented by the Commissioner for health.

Bodies Of Ebola Victims was burnt to ashes In Lagos

Bodies of the four Nigerians, who died of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) have been cauterized in line with World Health Organisation (WHO) requirements for disposal of such corpses.
The decision to burn the bodies, it was gathered, may not be unconnected with the deadly nature of the Ebola Virus which is known to be easily transmissible from human to human, especially during handling of corpses of victims.
The body of the index (first) case, Patrick Sawyer was the first to be cremated on July 25, 2014.
A health official at the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) of the Mainland Hospital, Lagos, who confirmed the development, said the Lagos State Government in following strict guidelines for disposal of the bodies, authorised cremation of all the bodies.
The official who pleaded anonymity said the decision to cremate all bodies was to ensure appropriate containment measures and guarantee proper handling of the bodies.
“All the bodies of those who died of Ebola from this centre have been cremated. None was allowed to undergo traditional burial because extreme care is being taken to prevent further infections,” the official noted.
The WHO in recommending that people who die from Ebola should be promptly and safely buried, notes that cremation, which is the application of high temperature to reduce bodies to basic chemical components (ashes), is ideal for safe disposal of bodies of such persons in order to minimise further transmission.

British man begins treatment in London hospital - Ebola

DOCTORS at a hospital in north-west London have begun treating a Briton who contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone.
The man has been named as William Pooley, a 29-year-old volunteer nurse, by a US scientist who worked with him.
Mr Pooley was flown to RAF Northolt in a specially-equipped military aircraft on Sunday and taken under police escort to Hampstead's Royal Free Hospital.
He volunteered to go to west Africa to care for victims of the Ebola outbreak which has killed almost 1,500 people.
It is the first confirmed case of a Briton contracting the virus during the current outbreak.
Mr Pooley was flown out of Sierra Leone's main airport in Lungi, in an RAF C-17 transport aircraft.
He will be treated in a specialist isolation unit for patients with highly infectious disease, the only one of its kind in Europe.
A special tent ensures medical staff can interact with the patient but are separated by plastic and rubber. It has a ventilation unit that cleans air before it is released into the atmosphere.
Mr Pooley was described by a colleague in Kenema district, Robert F Garry, as a "remarkable young man and a natural leader".
There is no cure for Ebola but with treatment of the symptoms, and proper hydration, patients have a chance of survival.
Prof Jonathan Ball, a virologist at Nottingham University, said there would be immediate testing to ensure all organs were functioning.
"He really is in the best place and will have the best possible care," he said.
Last week, two Americans who had contracted the disease in Liberia made a recovery and were discharged from hospital after being given an experimental drug called ZMapp in the US.
Officials in Liberia also said three medical staff have shown signs of improvement after taking the drug.
The US manufacturer of ZMapp has said supplies of the drug are exhausted, but the Department of Health said it was working to source any remaining doses.
Department of Health deputy chief medical officer Prof John Watson has said the risk of Ebola to the UK remains "very low".
The World Health Organization has estimated 2,615 people in west Africa have been infected with Ebola since March.
Health officials have reported the first cases outside west Africa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The virus is spread between humans through direct contact with infected bloodily fluids. It is one of the world's deadliest diseases, with up to 90% of cases resulting in death.
A statement from Sierra Leone's health ministry said the Briton had been volunteering at a clinic in Kenema.

SSS Reports 13 Catholic Sisters' Attires Stolen

The Department of State of State Service, DSS has raised the alarm that at least 13 pieces of Reverend Sisters' regalia of the Catholic Church have been stolen from a shop in Kano state purportedly for suicide bombing.
A statement from the deputy director, information of the SSS, Marilyn Ogar, made available to LEADERSHIP Weekend advised Nigerians to look out for persons, especially female suicide bombers who may disguise in the attire
The statement reads in parts, "On 20th August, 2014, about 0400 hours, some yet to be identified persons broke into a tailoring shop located at No.55 Odutola Street, Sabon Gari, Kano, and stole about thirteen (13) pieces of Reverend Sisters' regalia of the Catholic Church. With the recent trend in female suicide bombings in the country, the removal of these regalia may be the handiwork of terrorists' elements that may want to perpetrate acts of terror using such garments.
"Consequently, this Service has taken necessary pre-emptive measures to thwart the exploitation of distinct religious wears for terrorist purposes. We also wish to draw public attention to this development and call on all citizens to be more circumspect and exercise greater vigilance with users of such peculiar attires.
"We enjoin all and sundry to continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies through the provision of useful information on suspicious activities within their immediate environment. This Service will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders as we strive to keep our country safe."

Japan ready to offer trial Ebola drug

"Our country is prepared to provide the yet-to-be approved drug in cooperation with the manufacturer if the WHO requests," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has been discussing the use of unapproved drugs as a way of getting a handle on an outbreak in Africa that has already cost more than 1,400 lives, with thousands more people infected.
There is currently no available cure or vaccine for Ebola, and the WHO has declared the latest outbreak a global public health emergency.
Several drugs are under development.
The use of an experimental drug called ZMapp on two Americans and a Spanish priest infected with the virus while working in Africa has opened up an intense ethical debate.
The drug, which is in very short supply, has reportedly shown promising results in the two Americans, although the priest died.
US company Mapp Bioparmaceutical which makes the drug said this month it had sent all its available supplies to west Africa.
The WHO earlier said a panel of medical experts had determined it is "ethical" to provide experimental treatments.
Suga said Monday: "Even before the WHO reaches a conclusion, we are ready to respond to individual requests (from medical workers) under certain conditions if it is an urgent case."
The medication Suga was referring to is Avigan, a drug in tablet form that was approved as an anti-influenza drug in Japan in March and is currently in clinical tests in the United States.
Its developer Fujifilm Holdings said it had received inquiries from abroad but declined to say how many and from which countries.
The company, which has diversified into healthcare fields, has "no problem" over the amount of stockpiles, according to spokesman Takao Aoki.
"We have sufficient supplies for more than 20,000 people," he said.

Germany defeated Nigeria to win fifa U20 women's World cup

Fuelled by a deafening atmosphere inside the Olympic Stadium, the Germans brought down Peter Dedevbo’s ladies to their knees to lift their third U-20 World title
Germany defeated Nigeria 1-0 to win the 2014 Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup played on Sunday night in Montreal.
An extra time goal from Lena Petermann were all the European side needed to lift their third trophy at the expense of Peter Dedevbo’s ladies that came into the game with intention of avenging their defeat to the European side in the final of the 2010 edition.
  • Nigeria dominated the first half, creating the better and more numerous chances with tournament top scorer Asisat Oshoala the main culprit.
She missed her first golden opportunity after 22 minutes after outpacing the German defence and rounding Kamper in a stunning display of speed and strength. However, she could not find the finishing touch, managing only to shoot into the side-netting from an acute angle.
Germany best effort come from a Lina Magull free-kick comfortably saved by Sandra Chichi in the 17th minute.
More chances came the way of the Falconets but could not convert them. Oshoala missed another glorious chance seven minutes before the break. She flashed wide an opportunity to put their side ahead after Chiwendo Ihezuo had done well to snatch possession from Rebecca Knaak at the byline and cut the ball back.
On resumption of the second half, the Falconets got more of the ball possession and yet, could not get past the German goalkeeper who was named player-of-the-match.
The Europeans also spurned their opportunities, with Pauline Bremer stealing in unmarked on a Sara Dabritz free-kick only to head wastefully wide. The Super Falconets then had to call on the bravery of their keeper, with the Nigerian goalkeeper racing from her line to dive at the feet of Lena Petermann, picking up a bruised jaw in the process.
Play still tended to rage towards the other end, though, and with five minutes remaining Nigeria had the ball in the net only for their celebrations to be cut short by the assistant referee's flag. That left extra time to settle this pulsating affair and, after Oshoala had again gone close for Nigeria, it was Germany who found a breakthrough.
Petermann scored it, slotting home from six yards, but the plaudits went to the energetic Bremer, who had robbed left-back Gladys Abasi before driving towards the byline and delivering the perfect cutback.

Female Soldier Beats Bus Conductor to Coma in Lagos over change

A female soldier in the Nigerian army yesterday beat a conductor to coma over change at Iyana Isashi, along Lagos- Badagry expressway in Lagos State. LeadershipNg reports that the soldier, who was in mufti, had boarded the mini- bus at Mile 2 and was going to Agbara area of Ogun State before the incident occurred. An argument which degenerated into a fight began when the soldier who allegedly gave the conductor N500 demanded for her change and the conductor said he had given her the money. Although some passengers in the vehicle supported the woman, asserting that the conductor did not give her any change, all efforts made by the passengers to make the conductor do so proved abortive. One of the passengers, Ikechukwu Obi told LEADERSHIP Weekend that the woman even identified herself as a soldier but the stubborn conductor did not want to listen. Obi said when the woman became angry and ordered the driver to park, they knew that trouble was brewing. He said the woman grabbed the conductor by his collar and the conductor threatened to beat her. He said his utterances angered the soldier who dragged him down from the vehicle and gave him the beating of his life.

Last Ebola-free Region of Liberia Falls to Virus

Every region of Liberia has now been hit by Ebola, officials said Friday, as other affected west African nations scrambled
to contain the spread of the killer virus.
After seeing people fall to the deadly disease in area after area, Liberia said two people had succumbed to the virus in Sinoe province, the last Ebola-free bastion in a country that has seen the biggest toll with 576 deaths.
The virus has spread relentlessly through Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone over the past months, killing 1,350 people since
March, and Nigeria has also been affected despite showing some progress in fighting the epidemic.
"(Sinoe) was the last area untouched by Ebola," George Williams, head of the Health Workers Association of Liberia confirmed.

IGP, Suleiman Abba

The Acting Inspector General of police, IGP, Suleiman Abba has promised to work with other security agencies to fight the current problem of insurgency.

Abba insisted that it was until the security agents worked together before activities of criminals would be curtailed.
The IG stated this yesterday while decorating the newly promoted Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs).
He charged the newly promoted police officers to be dedicated, hardworking and revitalise their energies in their assigned responsibilities as always to the service of their fatherland.
Abba said the police  expected the officers to  work harder and be more dedicated in whatever assignment they were given, urging them to work hand in hand with other sister agencies in the upcoming election.
"As you all know, promotion is a privilege; it’s not a right. You know the conditions for promotions, so I am calling on these newly promoted officers to be recommitted and dedicated to the service and welcome them into the Police management team.
These officers have been working with me since, including the past three weeks I assumed office. I urge them to contribute to the fight against terrorism." he said
He also said the promotion was coming at a time the country was facing serious security challenges which he said was threatening the peace of Nigeria.
The minister of police affairs, Abduljelili Adesiyan, in his address, thanked Mr. President, for approving the promotion of the newly promoted officers.
He enjoined those promoted to dedicate their service to the country, adding that their gallant efforts were appreciated, especially with the Boko Haram threat.
In appreciation, one of the promoted DIGs, Dan'Azumi Job Doma, thanked the force and the police service Commission to the promotion, urging other officers who were not promoted to be patient and work hard, as their promotion was on the way.

Sierra Leone makes hiding Ebola patients illegal

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AP)- Sierra Leone's parliament has approved a law imposing prison terms of up to two years for anyone caught hiding an Ebola patient.
Lawmaker Ansumana Jaiah Kaikai said the measure passed Friday was needed because some families had resisted seeking medical treatment for sick relatives.
The World Health Organization says Ebola has infected at least 910 people in Sierra Leone, killing at least 392. A total of 2,615 infections and 1,427 deaths have been recorded across West Africa.
The U.N. health agency said Friday the overall toll has been underestimated because families hide patients, fearing high fatality rates and the stigma that comes with a positive diagnosis.
Widespread mistrust of health workers has made it difficult to access some areas.
President Ernest Bai Koroma is expected to sign the new law.

25 dead in Central African gold mine collapse

At least 25 people died when an illegally operated gold mine collapsed for a second time in two years in the Central African Republic, police said Saturday.
“In all, 27 people were buried in the collapse of the gold mine. Twenty-five bodies were found and dug out but two could not be found” after the accident on Thursday near the southern city of Bambari, a police source said.
The mine in the town of Ndassima is under the control of former rebels of the Seleka movement who were operating illegally, police said.
A source close to the former rebels said he could not confirm whether the dead miners were Seleka members.
“(Safety) measures were not respected at the site. It is illegal for people to venture into the mine at night, but that is when they chose to go… Unfortunately, there are frequent incidents,” the source said.
A collapse at the same mine last year claimed 62 lives.
Thousands of people began exploiting the Ndassima mine illegally after its owner, Canadian company Axmin, shut it down in 2011 because of security concerns in the conflict-riven country.
The gold reserves at the mine are estimated at about 3.6 million ounces, worth some $4.6 billion (3.5 billion euros) at current market prices.

Deadly car bomb hits Baghdad military office

A car bomb has hit a military intelligence office in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, killing at least eight people and injuring 25 others, Al Jazeera has learned.
The explosion on Saturday targeted the Karada neighbourhood where the intelligence office, which also houses a police station, is located.
The attack came a day after a Shia armed group killed at least 73 Sunni Muslim worshipers at a village mosque in Diyala province, raising the prospect of revenge attacks as politicians try to form a government capable of countering the Islamic State group.
Al Jazeera’s Jane Arraf, reporting from Erbil, said that latest bombing in Baghdad adds to the already “very volatile” security situation in the country.
An advance by Islamic State through northern Iraq has alarmed the Baghdad government and its Western allies. The US began airstrikes in Iraq for the first time since the withdrawal of its troops in 2011.
Although the air campaign has caused a few setbacks for Islamic State, they do not address the wider problem of sectarian warfare which the group has fueled with attacks on Shias.
Bombings, kidnappings and execution-style shootings occur almost daily, echoing the dark days of 2006-2007, the peak of a sectarian civil war.

Obasanjo Commends FG, Lagos On Ebola

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has commended the Federal and Lagos state governments for curbing the spread of the Ebola virus in the country.

The former President stated this at the opening ceremony of the 11th Biennial International Conference on “Drugs, Alcohol and Society in Africa” organized by the African Centre for Research and Information on substance Abuse (CRISA). This came as Ogun State government has procured a variety of emergency supplies including specialised Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) as part of its efforts at strengthening its preparedness towards curtailing the sudden outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
Sequel to this development, Officers of the State Ministry of Health have sensitised Environmental Health Officers Association on safe practices relevant to viral hemorrhagic fever containment.
Obasanjo who however, submitted that if the attention given to the dreaded virus had been given to the abducted Chibok girls about three months ago, the story could have been different today.
He called for collective efforts at the West African region to stem the tide of the virus in the region.
According to him: “I have always believed that where we have done well we should be able to commend ourselves whether or not anybody comments. On the other hand, where we have not done well enough, we should be bold and courageous enough to admit our failing, show remorse and make correction.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, Lagos State Government and the Federal government separately and collectively have done very well in the prompt measures taken to stem the tide of Ebola disease and to prevent the spread into an epidemic proportion both in Lagos and in the country .
“We should hail these efforts which are in contrast to the efforts and time deployed to rescue the 276 Chibok girls abducted. The difference is clear and the results are obvious. Where we fail like in Chibok, no excuse will absolve us from the responsibility and guilt that will remain for years and decades to come.
Receiving the PPEs, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Daisi Odeniyi said that other efforts of the state towards curtailing the disease included visitation of the State Steering Committee to the isolation centers being prepared by the state to further step up the capacity to combat any outbreak of the disease.
The Permanent Secretary further said that the regular meeting of the Emergency Operation Committee and the Sub-Committees on ebola would take place as the State continues to implement its Emergency Response plan. [Vanguard]

For Nigeria To Move Forward, PDP Must Be Voted Out In 2015 – Aregbesola

Rauf-AregbesolaGovernor of the State of Osun, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has called on Nigerians to vote out President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party in 2015.

The governor spoke through his Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Bola Ilori in Osogbo, the state capital, on the sidelines of a forum with workers of the Ministry of Environment. According to Aregbesola, the nation had almost been grounded by the PDP, which had occupied the Presidency since May 29, 1999 when the country returned to democratic governance.
Ilori assured workers in the state that the governor would not sack any of them on the account of voting against him during the August 9 governorship election, which Aregbesola won.
He said they all had the liberty to vote for the candidate of their choice without fear of harassment.
The governor’s aide said, “Nigerians must vote against the PDP in 2015 presidential election for the nation to move forward. The nation needs a President who can steer its ship from the brink of collapse.
“The All Progressives Congress will present such leader, in fact there are many of them within the party and the person who would be presented would be capable of developing the nation”.

House built upside down - see picture

Niagara Falls, Ontario

Opened in 2012, a two-bedroom, 1,200-square-foot house was built by two Polish immigrants, Marek Cyran and Adam Niebvowicz, who originally came to Niagara Falls in 2004 with a miniature world of Legos. The rooms in the house -- kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, office, etc. -- are full of little gravity-defying details, and are designed for people with cameras. You take pictures of your family and friends, then flip them: the house looks normal, but the people are on the ceiling! Crazy!

Kitchen flipped.

The phone in the kitchen keeps ringing, an answering machine picks it up, and the caller carries on a monologue with lots of bad puns about "house flipping" and being "head over heels."

US doctor with Ebola ‘recovering in every way

Washington : An American doctor who contracted Ebola in Liberia said he was “recovering in every way”, and that he was looking forward to being reunited with his family. “There are still a few hurdles to clear before I can be discharged,” Xinhua quoted Kent Brantly as saying in a statement Friday. “But I hold on to the hope of a sweet reunion with my wife, children and family in the near future,” Brantly added. Brantly was working for humanitarian organisation Samaritan’s Purse in West Africa, treating Ebola patients at a Liberia hospital when he contracted the Ebola virus. Earlier this month, he was flown to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, where he has been in an isolation unit for treatment.

Both Brantly and Nancy Writebol, another American who also contracted Ebola in Liberia, received an experimental treatment while still in West Africa, where the Ebola outbreak has killed over 1,000 people. Writebol is also treated at the Emory isolation unit and is reportedly getting better. “Thank you for your prayers for Nancy and me,” Brantly wrote in the statement released by Samaritan’s Purse. On Aug 8, WHO declared that the Ebola outbreak raging in West Africa constitutes “an international public health emergency” and provided advice to countries to help contain the current Ebola outbreak. The number of cases attributed to Ebola virus disease in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone stands at 1,975, including 1,069 deaths.

I was offered N30,000 for human skull (Suspect)

LAGOS — Operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja, Lagos have smashed a syndicate that specialised in selling human parts, arresting three of its members.
The suspects are two popular herbalists in Sagamu area and a mother of two whose husband was alleged to be a supplier of the human parts. Recovered from the suspects were two human skulls suspected to have been procured from a graveyard. Their arrest, according to Police sources, followed an intelligence report received by the Lagos State Police Command on activities of human parts dealers, which made the Commander SARS, Abba Kyari, to embark on a manhunt, that led to the arrest of the three suspects, Mustapha Muritala, Sunday Oluyeba and Adenike Olanrewaju, with others still at large in Ojumerin area of Sagamu, Ogun State. Suspects’ account During interrogation, 42-year-old Murtala said he ventured into the business two years ago following an offer of N30,000 for a human skull. According to the father of one, “I am a herbalist from Sagamu, Ogun State. I was introduced to human parts business by one Sunday Oluyeba I knew through my friends, Olanipekun and Kazim, three years ago. “My friends asked me to get native birds called eyeoshi and eyeoke, and I succeeded in getting them. They later came and requested a human head with an offer of N30,000. They said they wanted to use it to prepare concoction for a pregnant woman in labour . “They told me they also use human parts to prepare concoction for women who have difficulty in getting pregnant. What they do is to grind the human skull, mix it with water and give to the woman to drink. Such concoction cleanses the stomach, after which she would become pregnant. “Sunday brought the human head and I paid him N15,000 for it. This is the second time I am buying a human skull from him. I do not know where he got them from.” How I was arrested “I was going about my herbal business when a man came and demanded human skull. As I handed the nylon where I kept it to him, some men I later discovered to be policemen swooped on me. I have never killed anyone in my life.” After his arrest, he was made to put a call across to his partner in crime, Oluyeba, demanding a human head. Oluleba could not make it but instructed one of his herbalist friends,Baba Beji, to go for the supply. He was arrested when he got there. His confessional statement led operatives to another suspect in Sagamu. The suspect, Juwon Olarewaju, another herbalist, reportedly fled on sighting the policemen but his wife was arrested instead. Mrs Olarewaju, 34, in her statement to operatives, expressed shock over the sales of human parts by her husband. According to her, “I have been married to Juwon for five years and we have two children. My husband is a herbalist but I didn’t know he was dealing in human parts. I was arrested in my house at about 2am over the weekend. I swear, I didn’t know anything about all these. I was arrested because my husband whom they came to arrest ran away. “These people implicated my husband in the matter; they said my husband supplied them with a human head.” The suspects, as gathered, would be charged to court soon.

Custom intercepts 15 bags of ammunition in Ogun

The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 1,480 cartridges of live ammunition concealed in 15 bags of rice from smugglers along the Abeokuta-Igboora bush path.

Controller of the state command, Comptroller Haruna Mamudu, on Monday said his men got wind of the illegal movement of the ammunition and had laid an ambush for the criminals, who appeared to have got wind of customs’ plan. Mamudu explained that the smugglers later abandoned the ammunition cleverly stuffed into the bags of rice and fled into the bush.

He said, the command also made a seizure of nine sacks of Indian hemp at the Imeko area of the state. Mamudu said, “This is one of the tactics being adopted by smugglers, which we are already aware of. Recently we made the same type of seizure of ammunition at the Imeko area. “Given the security challenges in the country occasioned by insurgency, the command has re-arranged its anti-smuggling strategy and the result is what you are seeing today.”
The area controller said the command would hand over the ammunition to the police, the appropriate government agency concerned with arms and ammunition.

Woman dies, after 4 hospitals fail to treat her for Ebola

Ado Ekiti—Ekiti State Government yesterday debunked rumours of an outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, in the state and cautioned against creating unjustifiable panic through indiscriminate spreading of unsubstantiated rumours about spurious cases of Ebola. This came as the government lamented the unfortunate death of a woman, who was said to have vomited and collapsed in premises of the State Ministry of Health and was rejected in four different private hospitals because of the text messages circulated by some unidentified people suspected to be in the Healthcare sector that tagged her ebola patient. At a briefing, Commissioner for Health, Professor Olusola Fasubaa assured that there was no known case of the disease in the state and warned that sending callous messages through the Short Message Service (SMS) could lead to avoidable death of innocent and non-Ebola patients. Medics in full gear to avoid contracting the virus The Commissioner said a similar case at the NYSC Orientation camp in Ise Ekiti where a young man who had been inadequately treated for malaria collapsed and was abandoned by everybody including the camp’s healthcare givers from 6am to 3pm when the state government intervened. Fasubaa, who explained that the National laboratory in Lagos had declared the blood of the young man Ebola-free, stressed that the patient was fortunate to be alive, saying he could have died from non-attention by the healthcare givers. He emphasised that to establish a suspected case of Ebola, the person must have travelled to an infectious area or had contact with an infected individual, and after 2-21 days of that contact would develop the symptoms of fever, intense weakness, bone and muscular pains, which would later progress to vomiting, diarrhea and organ damage. Prof Fasubaa appealed to doctors in the state to live up to their responsibilities and remember the Hippocratic oath they swore to. He stressed that not all patients that have fever or vomiting have Ebola. Narrating the pathetic story of the dead health worker, who was a staff of the Comprehensive Health Centre, Ogotun, the commissioner said “On 20th August,2014, a 55-year-old health care worker at Ogotun- Ekiti, who was said not to have had any complaints of illness in the last two months and no current history of travel outside the state (according to her neighbours) got to the Data Bank of the Ministry of Health at about 1.pm and collapsed after coughing out blood and subsequently vomited and she was immediately tagged Ebola victim without an adequate history taken and people started running away. “The woman subsequently died in the late evening. The unnecessary write-up through the social media by some doctors in the state is uncalled for, and counter-productive to the efforts of the state government in containing and curtailing the spread of the virus.” Ogun extends resumption date Meanwhile, following the current global health challenge occasioned by EVD, Ogun State government yesterday postponed the resumption date for all public and private primary and secondary schools till further notice. The government through a statement by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said the resumption earlier scheduled for September 15, 2014 has been postponed indefinitely.
